The father palace, and the authority palace
Read this palace for the father: what he was like to be around, how available he actually was, and how much of that you are still carrying.
The mother is not read here. She is read from the Siblings Palace (兄弟宫), which is one of the least intuitive facts about this system for anyone coming from Western astrology, and one of the easiest ways to tell a real reading from a translated summary.
The extended reading is authority as a category. The same placement that describes a demanding, unreachable father describes how you behave in front of a boss thirty years later — which is usually the part a reader recognises first.
The four palaces read together
Parents sits opposite Health and shares its triangle with Children and Friends. The opposition is the inheritance axis: what came down to you, in temperament and in constitution.

A palace is never read alone. It is read together with the palace directly opposite it and the two at the triangle points — in Chinese, san fang si zheng (三方四正), "three sides and four corrects." A difficult star here is not a verdict; it is weighed against the three palaces facing it, and a strong palace opposite can reverse the reading entirely. Any reading that quotes one palace to you in isolation has skipped the method.
This palace carries two older aliases worth knowing: 相貌宫, the appearance palace, and 文书宫, the documents palace — contracts, paperwork, formal records. The documents reading is still used, and it comes from the same idea: things that carry an authority above your own.
