The Chinese Zodiac: All Twelve Signs and Their Years

Updated 2026-08-02

In short: The Chinese zodiac assigns one of twelve animals to each year on a repeating twelve-year cycle, so one in twelve people share a sign. The year begins at Chinese New Year — between 21 January and 20 February — not on 1 January, which means anyone born in that window usually belongs to the previous animal. 2026 is a Year of the Horse.

The twelve signs

Pick your birth year. If you were born in January or the first half of February, read the next section first — your sign is probably the animal before the one your year suggests.

The January trap

The Chinese year does not begin on 1 January. It begins at Chinese New Year, which moves between 21 January and 20 February depending on the year.

Anyone born in that window has a sign that does not match their Gregorian birth year. This is the most common error on zodiac sites, and it does not produce a slightly different reading — it produces a different animal.

A calculator that takes your full birth date handles the conversion. A chart that only asks for your birth year cannot.

How compatibility actually works

Chinese compatibility is not a percentage score. It comes from two defined relationships among the twelve earthly branches, both of which you can check for yourself.

The triad 三合 groups three signs spaced evenly around the cycle — traditionally the easiest pairings. The clash 六冲 pairs signs sitting directly opposite each other — traditionally the most friction, though the classics treat a clash as a demanding relationship rather than a doomed one.

Triad 三合Signs
Water triadRat, Dragon, Monkey
Metal triadOx, Snake, Rooster
Fire triadTiger, Horse, Dog
Wood triadRabbit, Goat, Pig

Where the zodiac stops

Your animal comes from your birth year alone. That is one of the four pillars a Chinese birth chart uses — the other three are your month, day and hour, and they are what make a chart yours rather than a description of 650 million people.

If the sign reads as roughly true but too broad to act on, that is the system working as designed. The next layer is a full chart, cast from your exact birth hour.

Questions

What is my Chinese zodiac sign?

It is set by your birth year on a twelve-year cycle — with one catch: the year starts at Chinese New Year, between 21 January and 20 February. If you were born before that date, your sign is the previous animal.

What animal is 2026?

2026 is a Year of the Horse — a Fire Horse. The animals repeat every twelve years while the elements repeat every sixty, so the same animal and element combination returns only once a lifetime.

Is the Chinese zodiac real astrology?

It is the broadest layer of a much larger system. Chinese astrology proper — BaZi and Zi Wei Dou Shu — uses your birth month, day and hour as well, and can speak about specific areas of your life. The zodiac uses the year only.

Which zodiac signs should not marry?

Traditionally, the six clash pairs are the demanding ones: Rat and Horse, Ox and Goat, Tiger and Monkey, Rabbit and Rooster, Dragon and Dog, Snake and Pig. The classics treat these as relationships requiring more work, not as prohibitions — and a full chart comparison looks at far more than the year animal.
