The Health Palace (疾厄宫) in Zi Wei Dou Shu

Constitution, not diagnosis

This palace describes tendency, not condition. It reads as where the body takes the strain first when a life gets demanding — sleep, digestion, tension, the recurring thing you already know about yourself.

It should not be used to identify or rule out illness, and a reading that names a disease from a chart is doing something the method does not support. If something in your body concerns you, that is a question for a doctor and this palace has nothing useful to add to it.

The four palaces read together

Health sits opposite Parents and shares its triangle with Siblings and Property. The opposition carries the inheritance reading: constitution is treated as something handed down, which is why these two palaces are read as one axis.

How it is actually used in a reading

A palace is never read alone. It is read together with the palace directly opposite it and the two at the triangle points — in Chinese, san fang si zheng (三方四正), "three sides and four corrects." A difficult star here is not a verdict; it is weighed against the three palaces facing it, and a strong palace opposite can reverse the reading entirely. Any reading that quotes one palace to you in isolation has skipped the method.

In practice this palace is most useful in combination with the Inner Life Palace, because the pattern it usually surfaces is not physical at all — it is what happens to a body attached to a mind that will not put something down.
